Lac Viet Culture Center’s Awards Presentation
On Saturday, November 19, 2005, the Lac Viet Culture Center hosted their annual scholarship awards presentation for Vietnamese Americans college-bound high school seniors. The presentation took place at the Price Center at UC San Diego with the help of UCSD’s Vietnamese Student Association. Lac Viet’s director, Ms. Thu-Thuy Nguyen and Mr. Nam Trung Nguyen were both present to honor this year’s award recipients.

For the academic year 2006-2007, Lac Viet presented five $1,000 scholarships which will assist the students during their first year in college. All four recipients are women and four out of the five will be attending UCSD. The last will be attending USC. The recipients are Hang Pham, Lien Dang, Ngoc Truong, Thao Nguyen, and Thanh Pham.
Among the distinguished guests present were Phamatech’s founder and CEO, Mr. John Pham, the generous sponsor for the scholarship fund. Ms. Thuy Vo represented the Vietnamese Federation of San Diego to congratulate the awardees and impart some advice for surviving their undergraduate years.

The ceremony also allowed for the recognition of the awardees’ parents for their dedication and efforts in their children’s academic success. One of the recipients from the previous year, Ms. Jacqueline Nguyen, a current UCSD student and active member of the VSA, also talked about her experiences as a first-year in college. The ceremony ended with one recipient’s reading of her moving essay written in Vietnamese which she submitted to Lac Viet.
